2010-03-18 - To Live is Christ - Know Christ Paul wanted to know Christ - Philippians 3:10-11 Did he not know him yet?
Paul knew about Jesus He was will aware that simply doing the right thing did not give him intimacy Do we really know Christ? To become like him in his death is become like him in life:
The spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you - Romans 8:11 |
2010-05-18 - Desire's Journey - Dare We Desire? Although the voice was kind, the question felt harsh How long can we sustain desire against continual disappointment? By asking him what he wanted, Jesus took him back into desire
|
2010-05-31 - Desire's Journey - Cruel or Kind? Sometimes God seems cruel:
Isn't this the reason we fear to desire in the first place? Unless we understand our desperate hearts and our tenacity to arrange life as we want it - these events seem cruel Eden - we had it all but we threw it away by mistrusting God's heart and taking control of what we wanted Addiction exists whenever persons are internally compelled to give energy to things that are not their true desires Addition becomes our idol - we must give it up |
2010-06-23 - God does not change (part 1) Preached on 2003-01-12 Hebrews 13:8 - Same always; it is his nature Hebrews 6:13-20 - God's purpose is unchanging - Wanted to make it clear Numbers 23:19-20 - God's Integrity never changes - God keeps his promises and oaths - Who else do I know is like this? Malachi 3:6 - God does not change James 1:16-18 - God does not change But our lives change God allows our lives to change so we hold on to his unchanging hand |
2010-08-26 - Waking Dead - Glory (part 3) You are going to the need your whole heart - so you will need every ounce of courage and faith as well James and John, sons of Zebedee did hide what they thought
He can see clearly who they really are We many times spend our time hiding through false selfs Like Adam and Eve did with fig leaves We make up a glory because we are convinced we have none of our own Must ask: God, who am I? What do you think of me? What is my real name? The deeper reason we fear our own glory is that once we let others see the truest us - aka nakedness It is awkward when everyone else is veiled Living from your glory is the only way to live You cannot love another person from a false self You can not help others if you are in captivity yourself Our deepest fear of all - we will have to live from our hearts Means we do not know the next thing God will ask of us |
2010-09-23 - Waking Dead - It Must Be Intimate Most churches offer small group activities but they are usually short lived for two reasons: 1. Can't just throw a random group together and then it instantly become allies Closeness takes time - playing, working, helping, living together develops relationships All the believers were one in heart - Acts 4:32
You can study til you are blue in the face but it will not heal a broken heart A small fellowship needs to be a redemptive community and one that protects Idea: In a group - write down 5 words or phrases that captures your life right now Then find what stories or scenes or characters help you interpret those words |

2010-10-29 - Contagious Christian - Opportunities in Relationships Developing friendships takes time and effort We try to short-circuit the process sometimes by using the reason of there are too many people to reach We are wise to start relationships on a natural, nonthreatening grounds Then later, in the context of the relationship open up conversations to spiritual issues Most of His interactions with the religious establishment involved challenging their attitudes Jesus spent the majority of His time with those outside the religious establishment He rubbed shoulders with tax collectors (thieves in that day), prostitutes, those with low spiritual reprobates Because they mattered to Him and He wanted to lead them to the family of God We love Him because He loved us first Paul - "I have become all things to all men so I might same some" - 1 Corinthians 9:22 |
2010-11-04 - Contagious Christian - The Peter Approach Peter was ready-aim-fire kind of guy He was unhesitant and full force When Jesus ask who he way, he gave an an immediate answer - Matthew 16:15-16 And he later even challenged Jesus' stated mission head on - can you imagine try to correct the Son of God? He wanted to be close to Jesus no matter what Tried to walk on water When enemies came Peter was ready to cut off their heads He was direct, bold and right to the point He was a perfect fit for Pentecost in Acts 2 - some one unafraid to take a stand about the crucifixion of Jesus Some people in the world need a Peter in their lives They won't come to Christ otherwise - they need someone who won't beat around the bush and helps them clarify/challenge about the truth of Christ |
2010-11-08 - Contagious Christian - Matthew's Interpersonal Approach After accepting Jesus' call, Matthew did whatever he could to bring along as many of his friends as possible He put on big banquet for his tax collector buddies in our for them to meet Jesus - Luke 5:29 He did not confront, debate, or tell them what happened to him He relied on the relationships he'd built with them and he sought to further develop their friendship He genuinely cared about them and wanted to influence them toward considering Christ People who specialize in this approach, tend to be warm and people-centered Some people will never be reached until someone takes the time to build that kind of intimacy with them Interpersonal evangelist enjoy:

2010-11-29 - Trusting God - Samuel Preached by Rob Milner Read 1 Samuel 13 Following God's instruction is the key to our success 1 Samuel 10:8 - Go to Gilgal and wait for 7 days and then we will sacrifice Samuel was the judge before their were kings Saul waited for 7 days but did not wait to do the burnt offerings He did not follow God's instructions exactly How long before we stop waiting? Ever wanted to take matters into our own hands? There is nothing as good as trusting and then God fulfilling his promise There are two battles:
James 4:7-8 - God calls us to submit to him fully Trust in God and not your situation

2011-09-16 - Proverbs on Purity (part I) Proverbs 15:26 - Pure thoughts are pleasing to God We live in a time where we need Godly teaching about purity. Lets take a journey on the Path To Purity. #1. Lust leads to destruction Proverbs 7:21-23 - The Bible is clear that nothing good will come out of giving into lust. Ox going to slaughter, deer in a noose, bird in a snare, etc Proverbs 6:28-29 - To overcome lust in your life you must understand and believe that lust is not just sinful but wasteful also. Both the lustful look and the lustful act are wrong before God. What are some of the effects (consequences) of living a lustful life?
#2. Flee from Lust Proverbs 1:10-16 Illustration: In the movie Pinocchio, a wooden boy comes to life.

2011-10-03 - Genesis 3 - The Fall of Man SummaryThe serpent deceived the woman; she and Adam ate from the tree. Man blamed woman, woman blamed the serpent. The earth became cursed, and God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden. ObservationsGenesis 3:1 - Did God really say Personal ApplicationI need to be aware of Satan's tricks continuously. He does not want to be noticed. I need to pray and reflect on how I am living my life and find where Satan is getting me to deviate even a fraction of a degree. I need also examine my thought and find out they are out of line with God's Word. I will ask others what they see where I have taken a devour on God's narrow road. |

2012-01-24 - Ministry -The Miracle of Training Luke 6:39-40 Have you ever felt stuck in the mud in your Christian life? Feeling like you can't change? God's way to help us to change and grow spiritually is through discipleship. In Mark 1:17, Jesus said, "Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men." The beauty of God's plan is that whatever we lack in our character, He makes up the difference as long as we have the heart to imitate Jesus. God blesses us with spiritual people who we can imitate and be trained by. Remember as a child when you wanted to be "grown up" and would copy mom or dad. You tried to talk like them and dress up like them because you wanted to be just like them. What happened to our childlike heart to imitate? You don't have to have all the answers, or be smart or talented to be just like Jesus---all you need is the heart to imitate and want to be trained. Would people say that you remind them of your discipleship partner? Why or why not? Today tell your discipleship partner one characteristic that you admire about them and ask them how you can be more like that. |
2012-01-27 - Ministry - Do You Stand Up For Jesus? Matthew 14:1-12 These verses show clearly two different convictions. Herod was swayed by his sin to do even greater sin and John the Baptist never gave in to fear about confronting Herod with his sin of adultery. John the Baptist could have been fearful about confronting a king on his sin. Obviously it bothered Herod's conscience enough that he wanted John killed. Herod had a people-pleasing, weak-willed character because in vs. 5 he did not kill John for fear of the people. He also then had John Killed because of Herodias' influence. What is your character more like-people-pleasing or God pleasing? Pray to have a conscience today that convicts you to stand up for what is right and not give into pleasing others. |
2012-01-28 - Ministry - Compromise or Conviction? John 6: 60-69; Luke 9: 57-62; Luke 14:25-33;Matt. 18:5-9 How many times do we face the decision to compromise our faith just to win the approval of people around us or to be so desperately accepted? We know we should be strong, we know we should have deep convictions and take a stand for God, but we give into the peer pressure at school, work, and the people-pleasing non-conflict avoiding sinful nature inside all of us! We want to be liked! We want to avoid confrontation, conflict, and courageously calling others out of sin! Jesus loved God and others so much he was willing to tell the truth no matter how it made someone feel! He preached what people needed to hear and not what they wanted to hear! He laid out the hard teachings with convictions not with apologies! Even when disciples decided to leave and no longer follow him, he did not compromise the truth! He let them leave and challenged others,"do you want to leave to?" Are you ready to die to compromise? What are the areas where you compromise your faith? Identify two areas that you consistently compromise in either at work, home or on campus? How often do you compromise? Share with your spouse, friends or d-group what you give-in to and your desire to want to change. |
2012-02-01 - Ministry - Intimidated or Inspired? Matthew 23:1-7 The austere lifestyles of the Pharisees were not ones that Christ wanted us to imitate. They said all the right things and lived in all the wrong ways. People felt burdened around the Pharisees because they knew they could not match up to that kind of lifestyle. The Pharisees were not just legalists; they were separatists, which is what the word Pharisee means. They were men preaching a life too big for them to live. They did not readily inspire the average Jew to follow them. People were afraid of them. They lead by intimidation rather than by inspiration. In vs. 5, Jesus chastises them for doing everything for men to see. In vs.6 he condemns their obsession with position and again in vs. 7, Jesus rebukes their love of role. They did not attract the kind of following that Jesus did and this made them bitter and envious. They did not really have the hearts of the people because they had only a heart for themselves. Do you call attention to yourself? Do you focus on your position or your role and get angry when it is not what you want? A person focused on men, role, or position will not want to serve and therefore will not inspire, only intimidate. Find some way, even small way, in which you can serve or encourage someone today. This will be an inspiration to them and to you. |
2012-02-05 - Ministry - Touching Faith Mark 5:24b-34 This woman had been subject to a chronic disorder for 12 years of her life. Imagine for a minute the discouragement, doubt, devastation, and frustration of not being able to see this condition get better. In fact, it just got worse. Have you ever felt defeated about something in your life? Have you ever been discouraged for months about your marriage? Personal fruitfulness? Relationships? Then you can relate to this woman. One of the Satan's deadliest tactics is to keep people from being open about their lives. Sadly, many of us fall into this trap Satan has laid for us and we begin to live "double lives" in the Kingdom. We live a certain way in the world and a certain way at church. For a brief moment in her misery, she decided to have faith and touch him Jesus felt power leave him so he asked "Who touched me?" People stop, some get nervous, some put their heads down, some look at others. Everything is silent. The woman's conscience perhaps was pricked and she had a decision to make. She knew what she did and she knew what the right thing to do was. So she fell to her feet, trembling with fear, she told him the whole truth. But what she thought Jesus would do, he didn't do because he is not like you or me. She learned Jesus wanted to her to be open and tell the truth not because he wanted to scold her, admonish her, or even take the miracle back. He actually wanted to honor her. Question: What doubt or discouragement in your life is holding you back from being 100% sold out to God? Talk to your discipleship partner today about it. Getting "in touch" with it is the first step to change. |
2012-02-11 - Ministry - Even While Suffering John 19:17-27 As we read the passage, particularly v25-27, it is compelling the even in the throes of pain, Jesus is taking care of his relationships. It would have been easy for him to neglect this as he was busying suffering and dying. It is easy for us as we are in transition spiritually or physically to forget to care of our relationships. This can really hurt people make them feel as though we do not care. Why did not Jesus take care of all of this earlier? Why did he get this done before everything got more harried? The scriptures are silent on this but maybe Jesus wanted to see which of his followers would remain near the cross right up until the end. Mary, formerly without her husband Joseph and now, witnessing the death of her eldest son, was sure to be hurting. Jesus saw in John the compassion and love that He knew his own mother really needed. I think he also knew that John would be for her the closest thing to her own son, Jesus. It is convicting about how much Jesus considered and thought about relationships, even while suffering on the cross. Questions/Followup

2012-02-23 - Fear of Failure - God Always Sees the Humble Heart by Gene Kim - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 1 Kings 21 Ahab really wanted Naboth's vineyard, and so he was willing to do anything to get it. He kept on sinning until he got the vineyard - discouragement, self-pity, anger, and eventually murder. There are "vineyards" in everyone's lives nowadays, jobs, relationships, or successes. Ahab was so consumed with what he wanted that his marriage was ungodly. I see how I don't lead my wife because I get consumed with my job and success, and my relationship with God goes the same way as my marriage. I get so guilty that I lose confidence in how God can use my life. What encourages me about this scripture is how God uses people to confront others with the truth and how He is hoping for people to humble themselves and turn back to Him. Ahab was described as a man who "sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord" (v. 25). Elijah warned Ahab of the impending disaster because of his sin. Ahab took God's warning seriously and humbled himself before God, and the Lord noticed and blessed him! I can feel at times that I have messed up so much that God would never believe in me again, and yet God is merely looking for a heart that is humble, broken, and grateful. He hopes that I would have the courage to see my sin. God notices and moves on behalf of a humble heart! |
2012-02-27 - Fear of Failure - God Encourages Those Who Fail by Yvonne San Juan - Ministry Intern: San Francisco Church of Christ 1 Kings 19:1-9 Elijah felt like a complete failure. He was tired of running, alone, and so discouraged that he preferred death. Elijah had just been a part of a great victory where God demonstrated his power to the people and they saw rain for the first time in many years. He faced a new challenge as the Queen wanted to kill him, and he ran away. God didn't let Elijah fail; he encouraged Elijah with food and rest. God reminded him there were others that were faithful to God and Elijah was not alone. God enabled Elijah to keep on going when Elijah felt like he had had enough. Through failure, I have learned to call to God in prayer, and to be completely honest with Him, just like Elijah. I have also decided to be completely open about my struggles with my friends, and to not go through my failures alone. Also, reading about godly people who have failed in the Bible has given me hope and encouragement during the hard times that when I fail, God still loves me. |
2012-10-09 - Prayer of the Righeous - Arms Wide Open (part I) Wild Living of the Prodical Son Son became incredibly ungrateful toward his father - Luke 15:12-13 The sad situation became worse when be became greedy too - Wanted "his" part of the estate Consuming his thoughts and with no regard to what his father felt, he asked Amazingly, his father said yes From there the son wasted this money His life was full of sin - Luke 15:13,30 Then the economy collapsed and there was a severe famine - Luke 15:14 Life was so bad and he was so hungry, he became jealous of the pigs - Luke 15:15-16 The son was incredibly ashamed and reluctant to go home When he came to his senses, he remember his father and his generosity and kindness He thought as least as a servant, I would be better off than this - Luke 15:18-19 |
2012-10-31 - Losing Heart (part II) Life has taught all of us to ignore and distrust the deepest yearnings of our heart Teaches us to only live in an external world where efficiency and performance are everything Very seldom are we ever invited to live out of our heart We are most often wanted for what we can offer functionality Our external story is where we carve out the identity most others know
We live doing the things we ought to do rather than from our desires There is a step program for a happy marriage, become a Christian, success Communication with God is then replaced by activity with God Given the right plan, everything in life can be managed except for the heart |
2013-03-17 - Prayer of the Righeous - God is Preparing a Place (part I) Jesus wanted his disciples to remember where they were headed When Jesus prayed, heaven was in his mind We are being transformed into Jesus' likeness - 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 Pictures of the fellowship of heaven, not like being there:

ObservationsGenesis 24:49 - Tell me yes or no, then I know what to do next ApplicationThe God should be obvious in our lives. Do people see God in us and if so is it obvious or is there doubt in their mind? In order for me to reach out to others, my life needs to show Jesus. When I speak and invite others to church/Bible study does it come as a surpise or an invitation or extention of what I am already doing? PrayerPray to be real with people and to share my faith without reservation. |

2015-03-02 - From the Mountaintop I am no better than my ancestors who have already died - 1 Kings 19:4 At times, God takes us to a emotional mountaintip and then drops us into a darker time in the valley Elijah had just successfully
Just days after, Jezebel vowed to kill him for killing the prophets of Baal Elijah could have stayed and trusted God to protect him but instead headed to the woods and poured out his heart to God He had gone from the mountaintop of faith to the valley of depression Elijah confessed the he had enough and wanted to die but God wanted to talk it though God will give you just what you need to continue your life of faith |
2015-03-28 - Crying Out Bartimaeus: He only shouted louder. "Son of David, have mercy on me!" - Mark 10:47-48 Babies cry, that is what they do to get their needs meet Bartimaeus heard stories of Jesus' miraculous healing and he knew he had one shot to get Jesus' attention He commited a breach of etiqutte by crying out so loudly to Jesus that it annoyed the crowd Bartimaeus did care what others thought, he simply wanted Jesus to meet his need Because of his loud persistence, Jesus turned his attention and with command, he could see Never let etiqutte stand in the way of crying out to Jesus Christ |

2015-04-30 - Inner Conflict I want to do what is good, but I don't. I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway - Romans 7:19 Paul found himself unable to always do what he knew was right. He was equally unable to always avoid doing what he knew was wrong Paul reveled his genuine conflict over his desire to obey God perfectly and his inability to do so What Paul wanted more than anything was to have vicotry over sin We are sinners who must daily tap into God's grace and forgiveness You will find consistent success in avoiding sin only as you walk daily in the power of the Holy Spirit |

They don't want me to be their king any longer" - 1 Samuel 8:7-8 Samuel did as God had told him as warned the people of the consequences of rejecting their true king When Israel's elders looked at the nations around them, they lost sight of their own identity Things were never the same for the name Whom do you trust to guide and lead you in every area of your life?
