We often want the right things for the wrong reasons

Allowing secondary motivation become the primary motivation

Seeking advancement or seeking to please God?

How content are you with what you have? - Philippians 4:12

1 Timothy 6:9-12 - not just avoid but flee from the love of money
- Some use people, and love money
- God uses money and loves people

Who is master in your life? God OR Money - Luke 16:13

Avoid the extremes of loving it and envying those who have more than you

Use money to the fullest extend to serve him and bless others

Real servants do every task with equal dedication

Whatever you do, do it with all your heart - Colossians 3:23
You are never too [fill in the blank] to be a servant
Jesus specialized in menial tasks:

washing feet
helping children
fixing breakfast

Small taks often show a big heart
Little things determine big things
Race to be a leaders is crowded but the field is wide open for those willing to be servants

Real servants are faithful to their ministry

Servants finish tasks, fullfill their responsibilities, and complete their commitments
Can you be counted on by others?
We want to God to say, "Well gone, good and faithful servant" - Matthew 25:23

Real Servants maintain a low profile

Put on the apron of humility, to serve one another - 1 Peter 5:5
Not about show - If we are trying to please men (including ourselves) we can not be a servant of Christ - Galatians 1:10

Servants are content with quietly serving in the shadows
Wouldn't find many true servants in any Halls of Fame or Who's who books

Be confident that nothing you do for God is a waste of time or effort - 1 Corinthians 15:58

30 Days at the Cross - Lasting Impact

We learn that we should pursue: fame, fortune, and material possessions from the world

Jesus refutes all that we have learned - service, sacrifice, and spiritual power

Connection to the highest places - John 1:11
His ability to move the masses was unparalleled - Matthew 7:28
His understanding of what it takes to succeed was clear and unwavering - John 12:23-24
He stayed on task until it was done - John 19:30

Many of us spend more time at work than any other single place
If we aren't living the cross here, how can we be living it at all

Honest is required - may mean less money or advancement

Time commitment - it is easy to get caught up at work
Every disciple needs to work hard - but what is the reason?

Working for a promotion
Earn more money
Gain material possessions
Working for the Lord - Colossians 3:23

Is it to please your boos, yourself, or God? - Rich young ruler - Matthew 19:16-30

How could a temporary ob on earth be more important than Jesus and his work?
If we compromise at work, how will we ever overcome the world?

Teach Us To Pray - Praise and Thanksgiving

Every failure on our part to do God's will is a charge against us - a long document for most

"noutheteo" meaning to or counsel, translated admonish:

To caution, advise or counsel against something
To reprove or scold in a goodwilled manner
To urge to a duty
Not to rebuke

Noutheteo is used frequently involving one another

I did not cease to admonish each one with tears - Acts 20:31
We proclaim Him, admonishing every man - Colossians 1:28
Admonish one another - not just something for leaders - Romans 15:14
Admonish the unruly - 1 Thessalonians 5:14

More often admonish is the word couch
Not uncommon to pay to have a life couch
We should have a # of relationships with people who know us and can help
We must also realize that we can give others couching as well

After humbling our hearts and mourning over our sin - we become his children, part of the family

Keep peace is an on-going process
Our lives must be continually cleansed from sin

We should lower our bad cholesterol and exercise more

Since we desire a healthy heart for a longer life we: diet and exercise
The heart is the "want to" muscle

When we really want something, we go after it with all of our heart

Mission - First the Kingdom

No one is ready to follow Jesus who is not ready to put the kingdom of God first above everything else in his life
Take away the radicalness of the message and you take away the power of the message

Compromise it and you have religion but not the church of Jesus Christ
Every kingdom has a king
God is the king of kings and the lord of lords - 2 Timothy 6:15
Jesus is known as both Lord and Christ, King and Savior - Acts 2:38

We are the servants, subjects, and even slaves of God - Romans 6:22
The centurion understood this authority - Luke 7:8
You will be given all the things you need when you seek first the kingdom - Matthew 6:33

Can you powerfully proclaim this message to others because it is so clearly your conviction? - Colossians 3:1-2

When making decisions, ask what is best for the kingdom.

Mission - First the Kingdom

Knowing Jesus (part I)

Who is Jesus?

John 1:1, 14

Jesus is God in the flesh. He is the unique Son of God: fully God and fully man!
God came to earth as a man in order that we could come to know him.
If you were an all powerful and invisible God, how would you have tried to communicate your love to your creation?
Illustration: Imagine trying to talk to an ant - How do you communicate with them without terrifying them? Become an ant yourself

Colossians 2:9

All the fullness of God lives in Jesus Christ.
Every aspect of God’s character can be found in Jesus.
Reading through any of the Gospels describing Jesus life and words will give you insight into God’s character and will for your life.

Here are several aspects from a day in the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark:

~Mark 1:21-45

Mark 1:21-22 - Jesus was an amazing teacher whose words were spoken with authority.
Mark 1:23-28 - Jesus cast out demons, showing that the power of God was present in him.
Mark 1:29-31 - Jesus met people’s felt needs and healed the sick.
Mark 1:32-34 - Jesus focused his attention on others and selflessly gave of himself.
Mark 1:35 - Jesus was dependent upon God in prayer for his strength and direction.
Mark 1:36-39 - Jesus was consumed with his mission to preach the good news.
Mark 1:40-42 - Jesus was filled with compassion for all people.
Mark 10:32-34, 45 - Jesus came to serve, and gave his perfect life as a ransom for sinners. As predicted, he was rejected by his people and crucified - but he rose from the dead three days later.

Baptism into Christ (part II)

Ephesians 1:3-10

An important New Testament teaching: every spiritual blessing from God is found “in Christ.”
What are some of those blessings listed here? (Sonship, adoption, grace, redemption, forgiveness…)
So how does a person enter “into Christ”? (Next passage.)

Galatians 3:26-29

We are baptized “into Christ.” Note that Paul did not consider faith and baptism to be contradictory.
Baptism is a tangible expression of faith that places us “in Christ” where salvation occurs.

Infant Baptism? Colossians 2:11-12

Baptism is an immersion in water (from the Greek baptizo meaning “plunge, dip, immerse” - see Acts 8:38-39), but it does not operate “automatically” apart from the faith of the one who is baptized.
Can an infant believe? Repent of sin? And what sins need to be forgiven?
Ezekiel 18:20: Contrary to the widely held doctrine of “original sin,” guilt for sin is not inherited from our parents.
We are guilty for our own sins and saved by grace through our own response of faith.

For oneness with the Father, we must be of the same kind of person:

Ephesians 4:22-24 - Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness
Colossians 3:10 - Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator

Oneness with the Father is a definable concept in our own personal lives.

What it does NOT mean:

It is not merely being a member of the church.
It is not merely being baptized.
It is not merely observing the Lord’s Supper each Sunday.
It is not merely the equivalent of quiet time each day.
It is not merely an involvement in one or more discipling relationships.
It is not merely being busy in “Church work”.
It is not merely being fruitful in evangelism.

What it DOES mean:

It means that I am continually conscious of God’s presence and that I desire such by seeking God’s face throughout the day
It means that His thoughts are becoming my thoughts, His ways are becoming my ways (this is a continual, never ending process)
It means that I truly love God and want to obey His will with more of my heart each day.

Mind of Christ - Heavenly Mission (part VI)

Humility is essential in beginning and maintaining a relationship with God. Pride, the opposite of humility, is often difficult to see in yourself and difficult to define in one’s character. It can be described as stubbornness toward God and his Word as well as others, or as independence from God and/or others.

Let’s look at a few examples of what humility is NOT.

Stubborn: Pharaoh was stubborn towards the Lord’s will - Exodus 13:15
Pride: It’s hard to see your own pride but others can easily - Psalms 73:6
Arrogance: God hates arrogance - Proverbs 8:13

Let’s look at what examples of humility truly looks like.

Proverbs 15:33 - fear of God brings about wisdom and humility
Proverbs 16:3 - put God first and you will be successful
Philippians 2:3 - putting others before yourself
Colossians 3:12 - we are to put on humility daily
1 Peter 5:5 - respect others and clothe yourself with humility

Colossians 1:28-29 - They discipled (trained) each other to be better disciples of Jesus.
Ephesians 4:29 - Built each other up (no gossip but encouragement)
Ephesians 5:21 - Submit to each other (husband, wife, leaders, etc…) because of Christ.

Remember we all have challenges from our past (personal, spiritual and family) but we are all born again into the family of God. God is the head of the family and we are all brothers and sisters.
